Financial Support
Following a natural disaster, financial support is available from the State and Commonwealth government. The aim of these programs is to get individuals, families, business and communities back on their feet as soon as practicable without substituting for insurance or mitigation.
Providing the community losses have been significant, a State Disaster does not have to be officially declared in order for relief funds to become available. The State Disaster Committee may also be involved in coordinating special public appeals.
State Assistance
Children, Youth and Family Services (CYFS) coordinates direct financial assistance and relief to victims after a disaster.
What's available?
- Immediate Personal Hardship & Distress payments (CYFS)
- Infrastructure restoration grants (NDRA)
- Agricultural loan grants (NDRA)
- Business loan grants (NDRA)
- Special financial dispensation (CYFS)
- Special relief funds, coordinated by the State Disaster Committee, details through Department for Families and Communities.
You will need to register with a disaster support centre or Child, Youth and Family Services (CYFS).
Commonwealth Assistance
Most Commonwealth assistance to disaster victims falls under the Natural Disaster Relief Arrangements (NDRA) and is managed in South Australia by Children, Youth and Family Services (CYFS).
Centrelink coordinates special commonwealth financial support to clients following a nationally declared disaster.
Insurance
The insurance industry has special arrangements that apply after a disaster event to help speed up payments and minimise distress.
They include enhanced claim assessment, dealing with destroyed insurance papers and recovery support.
