Grants/Funding/Awards
A range of special grants are available for emergency management projects. Grants are generally applicable to organisations involved in managing emergency risk through Prevention, Preparedness Response and Recovery.
In 2004 South Australia became a partner in the Natural Disaster Mitigation Program. This program assists communities mitigate natural disasters losses through planning and works. (See website)
Other potential grant sources include the Premier's Community Initiatives Fund, the Catchment Management Subsidy Scheme, The Regional Flood Mitigation Programme, Emergency Management Australia Projects Program, EMA research and development program.
Grants are also available for personal development of emergency management personnel through Churchill fellowships, and other benevolent funds.
National awards for safer communities are made annually through Emergency Management Australia
Working Together to Manage Emergencies Volunteer Support and Local Council Grants Program
Volunteer organisations that are recognised under the State Emergency Management Plan may seek grants for volunteer recruitment, retention and development training.
Local governments may seek grants for:
- the development and implementation of emergency risk management planning (the SafeSA program);
- community risk awareness;
- enhancing protective measures for critical infrastructure; and
- staff security and emergency management awareness training.
Successful applicants to the 2005 round have now been announced. The 2006/2007 round will open shortly and close on 3 March 2006.

Australian Safer Communities Awards
Sponsored by Emergency Management Australia, the 2005 Australian Safer Communities Awards continue the practice of celebrating the excellent work undertaken by groups and individuals that contribute to building a safer community.
Awards are given at State level, with State winners then eligible to be considered for a National Award.
The Awards cover all aspects of emergency management from risk assessment, research, education and training, information and knowledge management, prevention, preparedness, response and recovery, in two categories of pre-disaster and post disaster.
South Australia's 2005 award winner:
The City of Onkaparinga for the development of bushfire threat maps for all areas within the City.
